What is AI?
- AI learns from a very large number of examples. Then it guesses the most likely next word, or the most likely picture.
- It can be wrong, and still sound very sure. Check anything that matters.
- It does not know you. It only knows what you type to it.
- It is a helper, not a person. Be kind to it if you like, but do not trust it like a friend.
- Never type passwords, NRIC numbers, or bank details into an AI.
Stay safe
AI makes it easy to fake a voice, a face and a message. Scammers use it. These habits protect you.
- Hang up and call back. If a caller worries you, hang up. Then call the number you already know, such as the number on your bank card.
- Agree a family safe word. A voice on the phone can be copied from a short clip. Pick a secret word with your family. Ask for it if someone calls in a panic and asks for money.
- Government officials will never ask you to transfer money over a phone call. This is what ScamShield says. A real officer does not ask for an OTP either.
- Never give your OTP to anyone, for any reason.
- Video calls can be faked. Seeing a face does not prove who it is. Be careful when someone asks for money, even a person who looks like family.
- Not sure? Ask first. Call the ScamShield helpline on 1799, or check the ScamShield app or website.
Try these apps
Each one has a free version. You can try them at home after the session. Prompts to try, any time.
- ChatGPTGood for chatting, writing and explaining things in simple words.
- GeminiGood if you already use Google. It works well with your Google account.
- ClaudeGood for careful writing, and for reading long letters and documents.
- GrokGood for quick answers and a chat with a lighter tone.
- Meta AI in WhatsAppGood because it is already inside the app you use every day.
What to try next
- Explain a letter. Take a photo of a confusing letter and ask what it means.
- Plan a trip. Ask for a three-day plan, then change it until it suits you.
- Practise a language. Ask it to chat with you slowly, and to fix your mistakes.
- Help with homework, the right way. Ask it to explain, not to give the answer.
- Make a birthday card. Ask for a short poem and a picture for someone you love.
